Friends having fun at my booth<br />
<br />
You know that saying "it takes a village...."? That's what it felt like with so many helping me in all aspects of this garden show. It would be really hard without them. My sisters helped me set up and take down (LOTS of work!) Friends watched my booth, walked my dog, took pictures, shared Facebook announcements, and came to shop, watch my demo, and for moral support. They also lent tablecloths and display racks. My thoughtful hubby had food and wine ready both nights when I got home and unpacked the car (HIS car that I borrowed to fit all my stuff!)<br />
<br />
As a result, the show was SO much fun and I was able to relax and just enjoy the whole event after weeks of painting, printing and packaging. It's so rewarding to have this connection with people and community; it inspires me to keep painting with the knowledge it does spark smiles and joy. Sales were great and I have a new list of people that want lessons too. Looks like more fun ahead for the summer!</div>

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">
Reflecting and remembering 2018 activities: pardon my rambling but I just want to get these thoughts and memories down before they're forgotten.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I had decided to not do so many art shows to see what might evolve. Expenses are high and it's time consuming to produce print work for them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first third of the year saw me hunkering down and painting, monthly Urban Sketchers group gatherings, teaching watercolor classes at Imagine Gallery who displays my work, a Brusho workshop, several local exhibitions at a church, libraries and museum,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
learned origami from an excellent local artisan <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Peaceofpaperdesigns/">https://www.facebook.com/Peaceofpaperdesigns/</a> , an art show and demos at <a href="https://www.dickmanfarms.com/">https://www.dickmanfarms.com/</a> VaVa Bloom garden show, sketched at several Naturalization ceremonies (immigrants become US citizens) with a goal of doing some paintings for the courthouse.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The second third May-August: organized our annual June Paint Out art show and sale at our John D. Barrow art gallery <span style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.barrowgallery.org/visit.php">http://www.barrowgallery.org/visit.php</a> and took a break from art shows and just painted, took a great anniversary trip to Italy with my husband, did some local demos and my first private lessons at home. I did another Brusho workshop at a friend's lakeside home that was a blast. They organized snacks and dinner and set up all the tables and materials. so much fun! It was a really hot and humid summer so I really didn't do much plein air, choosing to stay cool on my shady porch. My thought was to build up a collection for later art shows in the Fall.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: center;">The last third September-December: Taught a one day watercolor workshop at Imagine Gallery, and took a fabulous flower painting workshop from Helen Dealtry in Hudson NY. It was great learning her approach using bright inks and different papers, and how she earns a living. She is delightful besides!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Put some prints and notecards in two new consignment gift shops. Applied and got accepted as a a Signature member of Central New York Watercolor Society.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: center;">A friend and I organized a one day Fall art fair at a local nature center that was very successful-we learned a lot about organizing and advertising-it was a ton of work but happily it was well attended and the artists did well so we may do it again next year. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: center;">Time is always of the essence in Fall to make some Holiday sales-I did a one day art show-Lakeside Artistry-it was so relaxing to be close to home! And the following week WAS at home; I decided to try my first studio open house. Locals always like to buy notecards for Christmas so I thought why not- even if just a couple people show up it will be fun and get some painting work done meanwhile. Made some hot cider and gingerbread cookies-timed to be warm out of the oven when people came. At the last minute I decided to donate a percentage of sales to a cause in honor of a friend that had recently passed. Well, it turned out to be like a wonderful holiday party- lots of people came, made some nice sales, and was able to make a nice donation.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: center;">Became more active on Instagram and working to increase followers.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: center;">Made several art donations to local causes.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So it looks like it was a year of painting and trying new things in lieu of doing a lot of art shows. Seeing what works and where my art interests will evolve. I learned that I love doing a few local art shows for the connection to people and loyal followers. It's pure joy seeing everyone and getting their reaction to the art, knowing they are buying something I painted to make themselves and others happy. In 2019 I'd like to continue to learn and make great art, teach a bit, and look for more avenues to make sales. More ideas for the New Year in the next blog!</div>

I'm very excited to announce I have been selected to be a signature member of the Central New York Watercolor Society. I received my certificate at the 36th Annual Meeting of CNYWS. It is a juried process where six members judge the consistency and quality of your work before acceptance. It's gratifying when your hard work is recognized-I will strive to continue to paint pieces that are worthy of this honor! Also looking forward to new opportunities and directions for my paintings, and working with more watercolor artists in the area.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As an added bonus, I won this painting by Mark Mehaffey! He is an internationally acclaimed instructor who did the workshop for the group this year. A good Karma day!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I must say I'm quite enjoying introducing people to watercolor. There are so many people that want to try and have been afraid. Why is it we are afraid of something that can't possibly hurt us? Performance anxiety? Fear of failure? Egos? Whatever it is I hope these workshops dispel those feelings somewhat. We had all day fun practicing washes, getting pigment to flow, lifting, splattering, a bit of masking and other techniques to be loose and have fun. We actually ran out of time before finishing the last birch tree masking exercise-everyone was so enthused!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One huge thing I learned was how student grade paint just doesn't cut it for washes-they were grainy and dull. Probably fine for color mixing experiments if you have them already. I get it-why spend a lot if you don't know if you'll continue? The reality is you probably won't continue if you get frustrated with your results. I always suggest artist grade colors to get, but next time will be more insistent. I'm working harder on finding good deals for beginner sets. Even three tubes of good quality is better than 10 student grade. Will post here with recommendations when I find them!</div>

I love this little guy. Glad I took a photo because he has been recently purchased and living in a happy home.<br />
Several sketches of elephants were done at our local zoo, (so fun to do animals there!) then I came home and experimented with doing light wash backgrounds first, leaving lots of white areas. Practiced doing eyes and started with that first. Over a couple days I gently added layers and lines, just enough to add features and stopped there before overworking. That is the hard part-knowing when to stop!</div>

Every July our yard is full of wild black raspberries-free breakfast! I love when the berries are all different colors in their stages of ripening. Played with a bunch of different colors trying to capture the juiciness. I used Alizarin crimson, Winsor violet, and Quinacridone lilac, with a spritz of orange here and there to warm it up.</div>

The over all theme was about loose techniques for either beginners or experienced painters. It was a great mix of ages and levels, men and women.<br />
The first two classes were spent learning variegated washes, and a variety of things you can do with pigment-lifting, hard and soft edges, negative painting, splattering paint, (a favorite!) and a bit with texture using salt and cling wrap.<br />

The last class used masking with painters tape and salt for texture. The design is birthday candles. This ended up being great fun and presented lots of possibilities for colors and designs. Everyone has friends, children or grandchildren who would love a card painted just for them.</div>

I'm doing four basic watercolor lessons on loose techniques at our local Imagine Gallery in February.<br />
It's fun to get ready because it makes me sit and just play with colors, and what a mood booster they are! The class is maxed out so they're taking names for a possible future workshop. So nice: people are so busy these days it's great they're taking time out for themselves to learn and have fun.</div>

This was a year of many-some may say scattered- activities. I stretched myself with art shows, demos, workshops and local exhibitions. There were commissions too of pets and gardens; one project I'm especially proud of was the "Houston Pet Project". When the first hurricane hit Houston there were many displaced animals, so I put out a Facebook post saying the first 10 people to send me a picture of their pet would get a 5x7 watercolor portrait for $50, donated to the Houston SPCA. It was a big hit and resulted in $500 sent to help pets. It was perhaps a small thing but it felt good to help out. It was scary for me as I haven't painted a lot of pets, and never that many at once! However I found out a challenge sometimes makes you move faster and get organized. :)</div>

Paint Out-our annual John D. Barrow paint out that I help organize in June. I set up in our local park by the lake and painted this scene. It was purchased by a local resident. Love knowing when paintings go to a good home!<br />
<br />
Another fun thing; we started a local chapter of Urban Sketchers! I had a retired architect come to our Art Guild meeting to demo how he does travel sketches. He looked up from his drawing and asked if anyone wanted to join him sketching at a local coffee shop sometime. A bunch of us said YES! and we started meeting monthly in various locations. We started out known as the Syracuse Sketchers, then he applied for us to be a chapter to the national group Urban Sketchers. And that's not all! A young woman from our area that now works for NBC wanted to do a story on us, so a crew came out to film everybody. That was SO exciting! The link below shows the piece.<br />

So, yes, many activities-didn't even include how many family things went on- and now the first month of 2018 is almost over already. Time to ferret out the favorite things to do art wise and and maybe get a little more focused. Ya think? Perhaps?! We'll see!</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">I have a single artist exhibit in December-so nice to have them hanging for the holiday season! </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I love having gallery receptions for the opportunity to talk to people about art and get their reactions. And the refreshments are great too!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The Maxwell Library in Camillus is working hard to have a good gallery for local artists to display their work. It's great to have the extra exposure and nice for the community to experience art as well.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Most pieces will be for sale-perfect time for holiday gifting!</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well, that was a busy weekend! A lot packed into July this year. Friday afternoon I was setting up my tent for the festival, followed by a reception at Imagine Gallery that evening. I'm doing a group show there for the month of July with two other local artists, a potter and a glass blower. The display is fabulous-I'll post a pic later.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi1wEcszVX-k0wqY6q2pyG3W8igIU0j7re_v9ewr7B1RDYnqPXmAKGuAcQPC3vE2KxqgHmT30Nsqq9CAZo2F66weK1GEDkMZibopIqJtCLOcVDJzv2TQjebxzBQoSbQgVqD3VXpVIK3UNy/s1600/401038c3-0be2-4d8d-9c8f-ede62037904e" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi1wEcszVX-k0wqY6q2pyG3W8igIU0j7re_v9ewr7B1RDYnqPXmAKGuAcQPC3vE2KxqgHmT30Nsqq9CAZo2F66weK1GEDkMZibopIqJtCLOcVDJzv2TQjebxzBQoSbQgVqD3VXpVIK3UNy/s400/401038c3-0be2-4d8d-9c8f-ede62037904e" width="400" /></a>So.....it's hard to describe how huge and wonderful the Lavender Festival is. For two days thousands came to this little working farm to pick lavender, shop with about 30 vendors, sample lavender ice cream and lemonade, and take in the perfumed atmosphere. And there really were thousands. They came from Buffalo, Rochester, Geneva, Ithaca, Syracuse, Binghamton, and our own locals from Skaneateles. Traffic was backed up for miles, cars were parking in weeds when the plowed fields could hold no more. Lines to pick lavender were long, but people patiently waited their turn to select a beautiful purply fragrant bunch.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Still more waited in another line just to get into the barn that sold lavender products produced at the farm.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And they shopped. We have all been preparing our wares for months to have enough product for this hugely successful event. My booth was filled for two days with people buying my original art, prints and notecards. Saturday night saw me hurriedly packing more inventory and matting more originals for the next day as I was already running low.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Those also sold the next day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwO_iVYUsLZ8fvPpyI8vKB54IbKildXScwX5LRBmQMIlQH0eh1Dyj91ui8bkqCeJtN8PUpvtqgDcynrSRu6IPN8UOAAwwsPRFnM1ptshcy6haOVUXYO2GNbFLTaLUHzidZqc3zICdHYEna/s1600/5e4140ec-2348-42e0-96fa-ca4e98187fd8" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwO_iVYUsLZ8fvPpyI8vKB54IbKildXScwX5LRBmQMIlQH0eh1Dyj91ui8bkqCeJtN8PUpvtqgDcynrSRu6IPN8UOAAwwsPRFnM1ptshcy6haOVUXYO2GNbFLTaLUHzidZqc3zICdHYEna/s320/5e4140ec-2348-42e0-96fa-ca4e98187fd8" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As wonderful as it was, it was also bittersweet to watch everyone, from tiny children to seniors with walkers contentedly wandering the fields and selecting their lavender bouquets. For this was to be the last year. It has truly grown too large for the owners to handle and I don't blame them at all. It's time for them to rest and settle into a more normal life and stay healthy. For 10 years they have spent every waking moment getting ready for this event, as well as tending the farm and sheep and a full time job outside the farm.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I need to thank them, somehow, for giving me this gift of being a vendor at their event. It was here that I first started showing my art, starting with just a few framed paintings and some notecards in Ziploc bags, and steadily adding prints, and matted originals in proper packaging. I learned a lot about painting and merchandising, and enjoyed this chance to see people's reactions to the work. I've gained a following doing this show and I'll be forever grateful. Doing outdoor shows also tests your mettle, as weather can range from high heat and humidity to rain, wind, bugs, etc. One time I had a case of shingles that stripped me of all energy but still hung in there, thanks to my friends pitching in to help.</div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You need strength, energy and patience to set up a tent shop for the weekend; found out I can handle it!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thank you Gary and Karen for the opportunity to grow as an artist. Please rest and enjoy your freedom!</div>

Last minute entry into the Westcott Art Trail this weekend June 3-4-my first time participating-it's a wonderful springtime walk into artsy neighborhoods at various artists' homes. I'll reach into my stash of prints, notecards and paintings and have a tent with some other artist buds from Gallery 54 and the Wrens Den. It'll be a fun time!<br />
I'm at #6 on the Trail Map-click the link to get all the info<br />

These are some beginning watercolor exercises I had people do in a recent 3 hour workshop. The students were pretty much rank beginners or had never tried watercolor before. It was set up in a local library as part of their learning series with student grade paper and paint supplied, and it worked fine for an introductory class. I emphasized that if they really want to continue to learn to paint watercolors, it's important to get artist grade paper and paints and a few good brushes. The right tools for a trade make a huge difference!</div>

I demonstrated four ways to use the washes; clockwise from top-negative painting, salt and cling wrap for texture, dragging spattered paint our from a central puddle, and masking off.</div>

I painted some bachelor button flowers and a feather incorporating some of the techniques- wash, cling wrap and splatter.<br />

Everybody had fun including me! Sorry I don't have pictures of everyone and their work; the time went fast and before I knew it they were packed up and leaving, and hopefully inspired to give it a try another time.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Time to rev up the flower painting practice for a couple demos this weekend at Dickman Farms Garden Show. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">I really did need to practice as I spent this winter experimenting with other techniques and materials like liquid acrylics, monoprinting, and urban sketching. More about that later.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I always like to see how other artists handle flowers, and I have a few favorites that inspire me like Jean Haines, and Helen Dealtry who does fabric design. Andrew Geeson has some nice videos on Youtube. In the end you just have to get the paints out and spend a few hours here and there to get comfortable with your own style and let the pigments do their thing. Try color combos and washes and write down your favorites. Be patient and let things dry. Become aware of pigment/water ratios for different effects. Most of all give yourself a break from trying to create a perfect finished painting and just play, and play some more. And have fun! The scraps of wonderful color can always be cut up for little cards, gift tags and collage and origami. Hmmm, maybe that will be another post.</span></div>

Busy getting ready for the Plowshares Art Fair Dec. 3-4. I tried to make each day in October count for doing some original paintings to have ready, along with prints and notecards. This fall had a theme of pumpkins (of course) and feathers. So many beautiful feathers seemed to float my way-blue jays, peacocks and turkeys from a local farm, and delicate little loon feathers in the Adirondacks. Then I just had to make some fantasy feathers too!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love painting birds-little calligraphic marks sometimes make a wonderful little painting in a few seconds. For a full size more accurate image I really take my time-sketching to get the markings and beak and body right, and color studies, and wash swatches to stay loose and let the paint do its thing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tetdi4ZbFLc/WAJLoCO9FCI/AAAAAAAAFpo/pZ3yG2-7ds4mKpAPNV3a6bSUJlT0aPUhQCPcB/s1600/de6474d6-3d96-4957-885a-483918d6a69f" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tetdi4ZbFLc/WAJLoCO9FCI/AAAAAAAAFpo/pZ3yG2-7ds4mKpAPNV3a6bSUJlT0aPUhQCPcB/s320/de6474d6-3d96-4957-885a-483918d6a69f" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g6xVsKyUA88/WAJLoLmcUAI/AAAAAAAAFpo/vBxznEiWuUoYhmiIjpQGHMFFQfemn2QXwCPcB/s1600/53c266d3-c963-48ea-b684-5aaa5928939d" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="236" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g6xVsKyUA88/WAJLoLmcUAI/AAAAAAAAFpo/vBxznEiWuUoYhmiIjpQGHMFFQfemn2QXwCPcB/s320/53c266d3-c963-48ea-b684-5aaa5928939d" width="320" /></a></div>
Lightly outlined in pencil to get the shape, then I erase some marks so I'm not "coloring in the lines". Then I can start with the eye and first washes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3VWHRgJ8jkg/WAJLoInEV7I/AAAAAAAAFpo/RmXj3SHEMXwHVrc_bLsFhGCKNHdcyqG6wCPcB/s1600/04a4e5e1-9cad-488d-834a-b37b0a86854e" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3VWHRgJ8jkg/WAJLoInEV7I/AAAAAAAAFpo/RmXj3SHEMXwHVrc_bLsFhGCKNHdcyqG6wCPcB/s320/04a4e5e1-9cad-488d-834a-b37b0a86854e" width="240" /></a></div>
Putting in just enough marks to identify his distinctive feathers and face<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fA3YpC6FqOw/WAJLoBzRVZI/AAAAAAAAFpo/IelD-v5QuCEI7GZLYJbEZnnnQppUKZQNwCPcB/s1600/0e258adb-d467-4fc9-a7cf-750a3c4e8d9b" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fA3YpC6FqOw/WAJLoBzRVZI/AAAAAAAAFpo/IelD-v5QuCEI7GZLYJbEZnnnQppUKZQNwCPcB/s320/0e258adb-d467-4fc9-a7cf-750a3c4e8d9b" width="240" /></a></div>
His tail is added. A few loose swishes then little marks when dry. And then-arrgh!- I never composed what he was going to be perched on. How to finish this. Decisions decisions. I didn't want to ruin or take much away from his image by getting all branchy. His tummy needed defining. And what direction should a branch go in? I didn't want to cut him in half and lines are very powerful in a painting. They take your eyes either to or away from your subject and can be distracting if not placed correctly.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s0V4l_F5amI/WAJLoI1DW9I/AAAAAAAAFpo/cJfVjyU4iRgHWFd_yAFKxAp6wsjV2_ENwCPcB/s1600/0a27636a-2f3a-4a8f-8c68-ff6c8a9c87da" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s0V4l_F5amI/WAJLoI1DW9I/AAAAAAAAFpo/cJfVjyU4iRgHWFd_yAFKxAp6wsjV2_ENwCPcB/s320/0a27636a-2f3a-4a8f-8c68-ff6c8a9c87da" width="320" /></a><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dcUol__j5V0/WAJLoIvDxkI/AAAAAAAAFpo/3brYxQp4bFwlKg_yhme7cWXQM7giYGTCACPcB/s1600/be2043b4-8252-4d62-8550-9f6ea8fabe25" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dcUol__j5V0/WAJLoIvDxkI/AAAAAAAAFpo/3brYxQp4bFwlKg_yhme7cWXQM7giYGTCACPcB/s400/be2043b4-8252-4d62-8550-9f6ea8fabe25" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I got out my trusty little piece of acetate to place over the bird, and experimented. This gave me peace of mind to create a "just enough" branch to finish him on. Next time I'll prepare a little more so I don't have to struggle so much, but this worked out okay.<br />
<br />
I might add some more smudges to the background but will let this guy-and me-rest and see if he's done. A mat may be all that's needed.<br />
What do you think?</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">I will be doing a 3 hour watercolor workshop at the Fingerlakes Arts Organization in Auburn NY on Saturday October 29. Very excited to share some of my favorite techniques for loose and free watercolor painting! The time will fly! The aim will be to learn how loose, easy, colorful washes can be used to start a fresh looking painting. I had been doing the usual watercolor flower demos this summer-there are so many to choose from!- but thought a street scene would be fun. Imagine Gallery, who carries my art, had some of their artists do some demonstrations in front of the store during Sidewalk sale days. It's super fun to talk to people while you're painting. I used to be a little shy about it but got over that in a hurry when I realized people love to watch and tell stories about their art interests or maybe want to learn to paint too. It's a happy thing to discuss. :) It's also a great way to get out there in front of people and show your art.<br />
The list of demos this year include a Brusho demo for an art guild, watercolor for a Seymour Library artist series, Skaneateles Sidewalk Sales, and Polo for Preemies.<br />
